Program Description
Description
A special program sponsored by Front Royal/Warrem County Ministerial Assosciation. Coming to the Table and the Friends of Samuels Libary. This two-part program explores how the community's response contributed to Virginia's "Massive Resistance" laws defying attempts at public school desegregation, particularly after the Brown v. Board of Education Supreme Court Decision in 1954. On Thursday, August 29th, a panel will discuss the impact of the period on families and community institutions within Warren County. Special emphasis will be focused on how community churches were placed in the center of the civil rights struggle resulting from Brown, regardless of the affirmation or dissent of local ministers or parishoners. Then, on September 19th, a round-table discussion will focus on the insights gained from the first presentation and community reconcilliation. Both presentation begin at 6:00 pm.
Presenters:
Reverend James Kilby, Pastor of the First Baptist Church in Washington, VA
Betty Leckie, Former Warren County Teacher (1959-1960)
Dr. J. Michael Utzinger, Elliott Professor of Religion, Chair of the Dept. of Religion at Hampden-Sydney College
